Elevation Map of Giordano Bruno

Cartography is alive and well! This is the same mosaic of Giordano Bruno crater with the addition of topographic contour lines. Over the course of several years the LROC team acquired 13 stereo sets (4 images in a stereo set) that capture the topography at scales of a few meters. Digital photogrammetric methods were used to compute a digital elevation model (DEM), which was then converted to topographic contours and overlain on the image mosaic.

Future astronauts will need maps like these to plan the most efficient routes between areas of scientific interest. And in this case to ensure safety -- careful that drop is over 3,000 meters (10,000 feet)! If you have ever been to the Grand Canyon and looked across to the north rim from the El Tovar hotel that distance is about the same as the width of Giordano Bruno crater. However, the crater is more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon!
